Sargent Car Key Cutting: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
We cut and program replacement keys for Sargent automotive locks at our Long Beach shop and on-site, with most jobs completed same-day at $95-$185 depending on whether your Sargent system uses a standard mechanical key, a transponder chip, or a proximity fob. Which Sargent Models This Applies To
Sargent automotive key systems fall into three eras, and identifying yours correctly determines whether we cut from code, clone from a working key, or program from scratch.
Pre-2005 mechanical Sargent keys use a standard edge-cut blade with a single-sided shoulder stop. The keyway is stamped “SG1” or “SG2” on the bow. We stock Ilco 1646R and OEM Sargent 10-027 blanks on the truck. The aftermarket blank saves you roughly $15; the OEM blank uses a slightly harder brass alloy that resists the salt-air corrosion we see in Long Beach keys left in beach bags or boat consoles.
2005-2018 transponder Sargent systems embed a Texas Instruments 4D-60 or 4D-63 chip in the bow. The blade is still mechanical, but the engine will not turn over without chip recognition. We carry both aftermarket clonable chips and genuine Sargent-programmable transponders. The gotcha: 2012-2015 Sargent fleet systems used a proprietary 80-bit encryption that most aftermarket cloners cannot replicate. We test this before quoting.
2019+ proximity Sargent fobs are all-electronic, no blade. Programming requires a Sargent-authorized diagnostic tool or a compatible J2534 pass-thru device. We stock the hardware; not every Long Beach locksmith does.

Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing
- The blade bends or cracks at the shoulder. Sargent keys use a relatively thin brass stock at the transition from bow to blade. After five to seven years of pocket flexing, work-hardening creates a stress riser. We see this most often on Belmont Shore customers who keep keys on a crowded ring with a bottle opener.
- The transponder light flashes but the engine cranks and dies. This means the mechanical cut is correct - the ignition cylinder turns - but the immobilizer is not reading the chip. The chip coil may have cracked from dropping, or the chip battery (on 2015+ models) has depleted. We test signal strength before cutting a replacement.
- Intermittent recognition: works in the morning, fails in afternoon heat. The 4D-63 chip is sensitive to thermal drift. Long Beach summer dashboard temperatures - we have measured 147°F on a July afternoon in Bixby Knolls - accelerate this failure mode. A replacement programmed at our shop includes a heat-shielded chip housing.
- The fob unlock range drops from 30 feet to arm’s length. The 315 MHz transmitter in Sargent proximity fobs degrades as the internal antenna solder joint fatigues. Salt air near the Port accelerates corrosion at this joint. We can often resolder the antenna, but a new fob is more reliable.
- The key turns with unusual resistance or hangs in the cylinder. The blade has deformed from use, or the shoulder dimension has worn undersize. Forcing it will damage the Sargent ignition wafers, turning a $120 key replacement into a $340 cylinder rebuild. Stop turning and call.

DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check: verify the keyway stamp (SG1, SG2, or the fob FCC ID on the back), test your spare key to isolate key-vs-cylinder failure, and note whether the security light behaves differently with each key. Document this and we will quote more precisely.
Where DIY goes wrong: cutting a Sargent key by code requires a key machine calibrated to ±0.001 inch; a hand-filed copy will not activate the sidebar in high-security cylinders and may jam. Transponder programming without the correct seed code can brick the immobilizer module, particularly on 2012-2015 fleet systems. Proximity fob pairing requires a scan tool with current Sargent software - not a generic OBD reader.
