Kwikset Smart Lock Installation: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

Kwikset smart lock installation in Long Beach typically runs $280-$520 for a standard deadbolt replacement, including the lock, labor, and programming, with same-day service available when you call before 2 p.m. We stock Kwikset Halo, Aura, and SmartCode series on our trucks, and we carry Schlage and Medeco alternatives for owners who want to compare before deciding. Most Long Beach homeowners discover their smart lock is failing when the keypad stops registering presses in the morning humidity or the auto-lock feature starts cycling erratically after a power surge.

Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

The three Kwikset smart lock families we install in Long Beach each use different mounting patterns and backset requirements. The Halo series (910, 925, 99380) runs on Wi-Fi directly and requires a 2.4 GHz network; the Aura (942) uses Bluetooth only and pairs through the Kwikset app within 30 feet. SmartCode 914 and 916 units are the older Z-Wave and Zigbee models still common in Belmont Shore condos built between 2015 and 2020.

To identify your exact model, pop the interior cover and read the white label on the motor housing. The part number starts with “KW” followed by four digits. The backset - the distance from door edge to center of the bore hole - is either 2-3/8 inches or 2-3/4 inches on Long Beach homes, and the Halo will not seat properly on a non-standard 1-3/4 inch bore without a retrofit collar. We carry both backsets and the collars on every truck.

OEM Kwikset cylinders and motor assemblies are what we default to. Aftermarket equivalents exist for the SmartCode 914 at roughly 60 percent of OEM cost, but the motor torque spec is lower and we have documented three failures in Naples within 18 months of installation. For the Halo, there is no reliable aftermarket motor yet. We will show you both options and the documented failure data, then quote either in writing before we start.

Signs Your Kwikset Smart Lock Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Kwikset Smart Lock Installation Is Failing
  • Keypad buttons require multiple presses or fail in sequence. The capacitive membrane underneath degrades with salt air exposure, particularly on west-facing doors in Alamitos Beach where morning fog carries marine corrosion inland. The membrane is not sold separately; the exterior escutcheon assembly must be replaced as a unit.
  • Motor runs but deadbolt does not extend or retract fully. The cam gear inside the motor pack has stripped teeth, usually from forcing the thumbturn manually while the motor is engaged. This happens most often on the SmartCode 916 when family members do not wait for the motor cycle to complete.
  • Auto-lock engages at random intervals or not at all. The Hall-effect sensor that detects door position has drifted out of calibration, often after a door sag or frame shift in older Long Beach bungalows with raised foundations. The sensor is integrated into the motor housing and is not field-adjustable.
  • Battery drains within two weeks despite fresh alkalines. The Wi-Fi radio in Halo units draws continuously when signal strength is marginal; we see this in the Signal Hill elevation zone where routers are two stories below the front door. A Z-Wave repeater or Bluetooth-only downgrade solves it without replacing the lock.
  • App shows “lock offline” but batteries test good. The internal antenna connection has corroded at the solder joint, again from salt air infiltration through the battery compartment seal. This is repairable in our shop, but field replacement of the antenna assembly is not reliable and we recommend the full interior housing instead.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed pricing for Kwikset smart lock replacement in Long Beach breaks down as follows:

Component Price Range
Kwikset Aura (Bluetooth) with installation $280-$340
Kwikset SmartCode 916 (Z-Wave) with installation $320-$390
Kwikset Halo (Wi-Fi) with installation $390-$520
Retrofit collar for non-standard bore $35-$50
Rekey to match existing house key $18-$25 per cylinder

The range reflects lock grade, finish (satin nickel vs. matte black availability), and whether your existing deadbolt is a single-cylinder or double-cylinder configuration. Double-cylinder conversions require drilling the interior door face for the thumbturn, which adds 20 minutes and shows up on the written quote before we start. Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. No call-out surcharge, no “trip charge” added at the door.

Every installation includes programming of up to 30 user codes, app pairing, and a documented photo record of the door prep and finished work. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers both parts and labor. If the lock fails due to installation error, we replace it and absorb the cost.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check three things before calling: battery polarity, door strike alignment, and whether the deadbolt moves freely with the key. If the bolt binds in the strike plate, file the plate, not the bolt.

What goes wrong in DIY installation: drilling the bore hole off-center, which binds the motor pack and voids Kwikset’s warranty; failing to set the correct handing before mounting, which snaps the internal cam on first use; and stripping the mounting screws into a steel door, leaving the lock loose and the door compromised. The Halo’s Wi-Fi pairing sequence has a 90-second window that times out silently, leaving owners with a $400 deadbolt that will not connect to anything. We have reinstalled six Halo units in Long Beach this year after DIY attempts.

There is no high-tension spring danger in smart locks, but the door edge is sharp and the bore hole throws metal splinters. We carry vacuum attachments and deburring tools as standard. The name on the van is the same name on the invoice. That is the whole argument.
