Mul-T-Lock Car Key Cutting: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To

Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Car Key Cutting Is Failing

• The key sticks at the same depth every time. This usually means one dimple cut has worn below spec, or corrosion has built up in the corresponding pin chamber. • You have to jiggle the key to get the transponder to register. The chip is not failing; the antenna coil in the ignition housing is losing alignment because the worn key sits at a slightly different angle. We check this with a scope before we quote replacement.
• The remote buttons work, but the physical blade will not turn the backup lock. This tells us the electronic side is fine and the mechanical cuts are the problem. It is a common pattern on MT5+ fobs where the blade sees daily use and the remote sees occasional use.
• A hardware store key copy works for two weeks, then stops. Standard duplicators cannot read Mul-T-Lock dimple angles accurately. The copy is slightly off, and the harder pins in the cylinder chew it down until it no longer lifts any pin to shear line.
• The key bow is cracked or the blade is bent at the shoulder. This is physical damage, not wear, but it is urgent. A cracked bow will eventually separate from the blade, and a bent blade stresses the cylinder pins every time it is inserted. We have extracted broken Mul-T-Lock blades from ignitions in Belmont Shore and Bixby Knolls; it costs more than cutting a replacement before it breaks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

What moves the price: transponder generation (fixed code vs. rolling code vs. encrypted), whether we are adding a key or replacing all lost keys, and whether the vehicle requires dealer-level programming access that we pull through our authorized equipment. DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check an owner can make: look at the key bow for the series marking. If you see “MT5+”, “Interactive+”, or “Classic”, you have identified the blank family. That is where DIY ends.

Mul-T-Lock dimple cuts are angled in three dimensions, not the two dimensions of a standard key. A visual comparison with a photograph will not tell you if cut #3 is at 15 degrees or 20 degrees. The spacing tolerances are ±0.05mm. Hardware store duplicators do not even measure in this geometry. We have seen customers in Long Beach spend $40 on three bad copies before calling us, and in two cases those copies damaged the cylinder pins enough that the cylinder needed rebuilding.
